so Im looking for a job because the one im working at has to fire me because I shop lifted and its a store...so my question is when jobs do a background check will they not hire me because of that? it happened over a year ago
Looking for jobs with shoplifting on record?
Yes, they will consider it. Sometimes places won't do background checks if you make a good impression because they cost money. If they do check though it will be considered if you are applying at another retailer.
They gave you an oppurtunity to work and make money, what made you want to shoplift??
tsk tsk
Reply:Yes if they do a background check or reference check and the employer tells them you were fired for shoplifting (which they can legally do if they've documented it), or, if they simply say you're ineligible for re-hire. Did they prosecute you? If so, its on your record permanently and will prevent a number of employers (not just retailers) from hiring you. You say the job you're working at now has to fire you for shoplifting, but that the shoplifting occurred over a year ago. That doesn't sound right to me. They wouldn't fire you now for something that happened a year ago. Something else is going on and we're not getting the whole story.
Reply:That's going to depend largely on what kind of employment you're seeking.
Entry into the National Theft Database is permanent. If you are seeking retail employment, you may well be denied employment if the company screens applicants through this database.
In other fields, it will depend on which service the company uses for their background checks, if they do background checks at all.
Reply:Some employers see his as a petty offense so don't worry too much after so long any way your crimes become spent which means they are no longer on your background check.
Be honest to new prospective employers, you oviously regret it.
