Things you can claim for from the government whilst looking for job?

Was just having a conversation with someone, we want to know if anybody has claimed money back from the government for items they need for a job etc etc, and what they bought.

Thanks,

Daryl.

The above answers are correct when you are in a job - i.e. you can claim expenses for tools which you will use in a job.

But not whilst you're looking for a job.

Which makes sense really because how do you know what things you are going to need in the job that you haven't got - if you see what I mean.

Depending on circumstances you can claim state benefits e.g. Unemployment, Job Seekers Allowance etc but that is a different issue (and website).

(UK).
Reply:You can only claim business expenses on your taxes. You can't get reimbursed directly from the government for things you buy.

if that were the case, the gov't would have to pay my college tuition since I needed that to get my job. But I could deduct my tuition from my taxes.
Reply:Some job expenses can be deducted from your income tax - uniforms, for example. Best to go to irs.gov for more info before making any purchases though.
